This is part of a larger series where I look at the mainline Sonic soundtracks. Go play Mania if you haven’t already, and enjoy it and the amazing soundtrack behind it. It’s super solid, super fun, super energetic, and super great. It’s not a musical revolution, but it doesn’t want to or need to be. It’s just a gorgeous duo, in gameplay and music. And then it freezes over into a winter wonderland, the music exploding in kind as you explore this magnificent and stunning new environment. Act 1 is wistful, ancient, grand, but still just as upbeat. Of course, my favourite pieces are absolutely the Press Garden ones. The Eggman Boss Theme is a fast, modern take on the fights of old, still keeping that consistent beat for a military tone, but layering fast trumpets and frantic tunes on top of it to take it up a notch.

Mirage Saloon feels like a natural extension of this into a wild west theme, adding in snaps and that recognizable “wild west whistle”. Studiopolis was the first we heard, and it’s a showcase of the strengths of this soundtrack, going heavy on piano, trumpets, snyths, and above all, keeping that “classic” feel without ever going off into inconsistency. There are also some original pieces, believe it or not, and ohhhh boy. That’s not quite all there is to Mania’s soundtrack. And Hydrocity Act 2? Mmmmmmmmmmm it’s good all throughout.īut. Both songs keep up that theming of smooth energy throughout however, not feeling dissonant at all. Stardust Speedway offers a jazzy interpretation of the original in act 1, and Act 2 has a lot more of an energetic, techno feel to it. Ses a lot of the classic synths sprinkled throughout while still emphasizing the modern instruments. It’s still very recognizably Green Hill Zone, but it’s almost entirely shed the restrictions of the old Genesis tunes.

Meanwhile, Green Hill Act 2 ditches the classic bleeps and bloops almost entirely, throwing in modern synths, piano, string instruments, a much faster drum beat. While there’s not much more to say about them, damn do they ever sound good, the remixes having a solid grasp on what makes these songs great. Green Hill Zone Act 1 goes in heavily on the trumpets, and while a lot of it is keeping to the genesis original, the underpinning of it is firmly moderThis is pretty much how it goes for most of the remixes on the soundtrack.
